Save Life or Lose Life - Luke 17:33

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded. But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed. In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. Remember Lot's wife”, and in chapter seventeen and verse thirty-three of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said, “whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it” where we read:

Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

The verse reads, “Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; Luke began with the word, “whosoever” or “whatever person whether male or female” “shall seek to save his life” which means “will crave, demand and require keep safe and sound, rescue and preserve themselves from suffering within their vital force which animated the body and shows itself in breathing” “shall lose it” or “will destroy, render useless, ruin and mar their life”. Luke shared how Jesus said whatever person desires to “preserve” their own “way of living” will actually “destroy, render useless and mar” their own living.

The verse goes on to say, “and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.” Luke continued with the words, “and whosoever” or “and whatever person whether male or female” “shall lose his life” which means “will destroy, render useless, ruin and mar their living” “shall preserve it” or “will give life to, rescue and save their living”. Luke shared how Jesus said the person who will “render useless and in ruin” their own living will actually “preserve and save” it.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus thought of the lives of people differently than most people do. Rather than “preserve and save” one's own life, in the Kingdom of God, they were to “lose” it. When they do so, they actually “gain” “life”. If, however, they seek to “preserve and save” their own life, they will actually “lose” and destroy it. God knew people would be inclined to be “selfish”, and for a person's life to really “gain”, they need to humble themselves and submit to Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Those who are wise will “lose” their life to Jesus and they shall find more “life” than they otherwise would ever know.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “one shall be taken, and the other shall be left” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
