The beloved physician Luke wrote about Jesus, “as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off. And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go show yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan”, and in chapter seventeen and verse seventeen of his book Luke wrote how Jesus asked, “were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?” where we read:
And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?
The verse reads, “And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed?” Luke began with the words, “and Jesus” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “answering said” which means “responding and beginning to speak uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “were there not ten cleansed” or “wasn't there ten men who were purified, freed and consecrated by purifying”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned as to whether or not there were “ten men” who were “healed” by Him of their leprosy.
The verse continues, “but where are the nine?” Luke added the words, “but where” or “moreover in what place and whither” “are the nine” which means “are the other nine men who were cleansed of leprosy”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned the location of the other “nine men” He cured of “leprosy”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus took note of the fact that the other “nine men” did not return to give Him thanks for healing them. God does so many things for people, and most people do not even acknowledge Him for His gifts. His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus who came to die on the cross for their “sins” so they may live with Him forever. This is the greatest gift extended to mankind, and those who are wise will not only “receive” it, but will also be grateful to Him for all He has done for them.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “there are not found that returned to give glory to God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
