The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded. But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed”, and in chapter seventeen and verse thirty-one of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said, “he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away” where we read:
In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house,
let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.
The verse reads, “In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, ...” Luke began with the words, “In that day” or “within that time period or sunrise to sunset”, “he which shall be upon the housetop” which means “the person whether male or female who is on the roof of their home”, “and his stuff” or “and the person's implements, household utensils, domestic gear, tackle and goods” “in the house” which means “within his or her home, dwelling place, habitation and abode”. Luke shared how Jesus began to share what a person should do if they are on their “rooftop” when He is revealed.
The verse continues, “... let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.” Luke added the words, “let him not come down” or “do not allow and permit that person to descend from his or her rooftop” “to take it away” which means “to carry the stuff apart and separate from the house”: “and he that is in the field” or “and the person whether male or female who is upon the countryside, piece of land, bit of tillage, farm, country seat and neighboring hamlet”, “let him likewise not return back” which means “do not allow and permit that person to come back or turn around”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed people who were upon their rooftops not to descend and take away their belongings, nor were they to allow themselves to come back to their homes if they were upon their farms or neighboring hamlets.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how important leaving immediately will be when the Son of man, Jesus, appears. God knows the future, and He desires to have every person believe and trust in His Son Jesus so they will be “safe and secure” when He appears. Those who are wise will receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, but should Jesus come and those reading these words be upon their “rooftops” or “in their fields”, let them take heed to Jesus' words and “run”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “remember lots wife” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
