The Unjust Steward Commended - Luke 16:8

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of you? give an account of your stewardship; for you may be no longer steward. Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord takes away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed. I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses. So he called every one of his lord's debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much do you owe unto my lord? And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take your bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty. Then said he to another, And how much do you owe? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take your bill, and write fourscore”, and in chapter sixteen and verse eight of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said, “the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely” where we read:

And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely:

for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

The verse reads, “And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: Luke began with the words, “and the lord commended” or “and the rich man or master of the steward approved, applauded and praised” “the unjust steward” which means “the unrighteous, law violating and wrong manager of his household and it's affairs”, “because he had done wisely” or “since and on account that the steward made ready, produced and prepared himself in a prudent manner”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “master” or “rich man” “approved” of his “unrighteous steward's” actions because the “steward” prepared in a prudent manner for his future.

The verse goes on to say, “for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.” Luke continued with the words, “for the children” or “because, since and on account that the descendants, posterity and offspring” “of this world” which means “belonging to the current period of time or age” “are in their generation wiser” or “are within their time, period or age more intelligent, prudent and mindful of their interest” “than the children of light” which means “compared to the descendants, posterity and offspring belonging to the truth, knowledge and spiritual purity”. Luke shared how Jesus said the people within the “current age” were “more intelligent and prudent” than those who “belong to the truth and spiritual purity”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how the “rich man” or “master” “praised” his “steward” even though he was “unjust” and “unrighteous”. The “steward” took advantage of his current position and was “shrewd” in his dealings with his “master's debtors”, and he was certain they would be “indebted” to him after reducing their “bills”. God knows people are “unrighteous” in nature because “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (See Romans 3:23), and “there is none righteous, no, not one” (See Romans 3:10). Those who are “wise” like this “steward” will take advantage of the time they have on earth to “make things right” with God in advance of being “judged” by Him. This is done by believing and trusting in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and those who yield themselves to Him have prepared in advance for their inevitable “death” and “appearance” before God the Father in the judgment.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus said, “make to yourselves friends of the mammon of righteousness” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
