The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “spoke this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others. Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank you, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted”, and in chapter eighteen and verse fifteen of his book Luke wrote how how people brought, “infants” to Jesus where we read:
And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them:
but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them.
The verse reads, “And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them:” Luke began with the words, “and they brought unto him” or “and people who accompanied Jesus carried to Him” “also infants” which means “even so and indeed new-born and baby children”, “that he would touch them” or “so Jesus could physically touch the children”. Luke shared how people brought their small children and babies to Jesus so He could “physically touch” them.
The verse continues, “but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them.” Luke added the words, “but when his disciple saw it” or “however, nevertheless, notwithstanding and moreover at the time and moment Jesus' pupils, students and attendants observed the people bringing their children to Jesus”, “they rebuked them” which means “Jesus' disciples chided, reproved, admonished and charged sharply the people bringing their children to Him”. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples observed the people bringing their children to Him and “chided” them for doing so.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn about people bringing their children to Jesus so He could “bless” them with His touch. God loves children, and even when Jesus' disciples began to “rebuke” the people for bringing their children to Him, Jesus delighted in receiving them. Jesus lived in such a way that even “children” were not intimidated in His presence, and because all people must come to Jesus in the same manner as a “child”, those who are wise will willingly yield to Him like the children did.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not” to Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
