A Widow Seeking to be Avenged - Luke 18:3

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “spoke a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man”, and in chapter eighteen and verse three of his book Luke wrote how Jesus spoke about, “a widow” saying, “avenge me of my adversary ” where we read:

And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of my adversary.

The verse reads, “And there was a widow in that city; Luke began with the words, “and there was a widow” or “and there existed a woman whose husband had passed away” “in that city” which means “within the same dwelling place, town and habitation as the judge”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to a “widow woman” who lived in the same “city” as the “judge” to whom He referred in the last verse.

The verse continues, “... and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of my adversary.” Luke added the words, “and she came unto him” or “and the widow arose and appeared to the judge”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “avenge me of my adversary” or “protect, defend, punish and vindicate me, the widow woman, “of the widow's opponent and enemy”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “widow” came to the “judge” and wanted him to “vindicate” her with her enemy.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn about a second person in Jesus' story. This “widow” will teach those listening to Jesus about the necessity to “pray, and not faint”. God desires to help people in their relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they will learn how to seek God perpetually for whatever they may need.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says the judge, “would not for a while”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
