Give an Account - Luke 16:2

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods”, and in chapter sixteen and verse two of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said the rich man told the steward to, “give an account” where we read:

And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of you?

give an account of your stewardship; for you may be no longer steward.

The verse reads, “And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of you? Luke began with the words, “and he called him” or “and the rich man beckoned his steward”, “and said unto him” which means “and uttered, declared, proclaimed and questioned the steward”, “how is it” or “in what way and manner does it exist” “that I hear this of you” which means “that I, the rich man, have been given the faculty for hearing, perceiving and learning that the steward was squandering his resources”? Luke shared how Jesus said the “rich man” beckoned his “manager of his household” and questioned him as to the reason he “heard” about him “wasting his goods”.

The verse goes on to say, “ give an account of your stewardship; for you may be no longer steward.” Luke continued with the words, “give an account” or “deliver, produce and render a declaration, reasoning and calculating” “of your stewardship” which means “pertaining to the steward's management of the rich man's household affairs”; “for you may be no longer” or “because, since and on account that the manager of the rich man's household can no more exist as” “steward” which means “manager of household affairs”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “rich man” demanded that his “steward” “account” for his managing of his household because he was to be fired.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn what the “rich man” did when he discovered his “household manager” was “squandering” his “goods”. First he demanded that his “steward” appear before him and provide the reasons for his actions because he was to be fired for his indiscretions. God knows the “sins” of every person, and when they are demanded to “give an account”, He knows they need a “Savior” to be forgiven of their errors and wrongs. God provided His Son Jesus to pay the price on the cross for the sins in the world, and those who yield their lives to Him will have their “mismanagement of God's goods” forgiven and brought into relationship with God.

Next time we begin a new chapter Luke shares how Jesus said the steward says, “What shall I do? for my lord takes away from me the stewardship?” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
