Believing on Jesus for Everlasting Life - John 3:36

John the apostle shared John the Baptist's words, “He that comes from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaks of the earth: he that comes from heaven is above all. And what he has seen and heard, that he testifies; and no man receives his testimony. He that has received his testimony has set to his seal that God is true. For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God: for God gives not the Spirit by measure unto him. The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand”, and in chapter three and verse thirty-six of his book, John shared how John the Baptist said concerning Jesus, “he that believes on the Son has everlasting life” where we read:

He that believes on the Son has everlasting life:

and he that believes not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him.

The verse reads, “He that believes on the Son has everlasting life: John began with the words, “He that believes” which means “the person whether male or female who thinks to be true, places confidence in, trusts and is persuaded” “on the Son” or “in and towards God's only Son Jesus” “has everlasting life” which means “holds, owns, possesses and adheres to never ceasing and eternal life that is real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last for ever”. John shared how John the Baptist said “any person” who puts their “faith and trust” in Jesus obtains “eternal never ending life”.

The verse continues, “and he that believes not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him.”. John added the words, “and he that believes not” which means “and the person whether male or female who does not think to be true, places confidence in, trusts and is persuaded” “the Son” or “within God's only Son Jesus” “shall not see life” which means “will not behold, look at, perceive or look upon eternal everlasting life”; “but the wrath of God” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the anger, violent emotion, indignation, ire, violent passion and justifiable abhorrence belonging to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “abides on him” which means “remains, tarries and sojourns upon that person whether male or female”. John shared how John the Baptist said the person who “trusts in, relies upon and clings to” Jesus will “observe and obtain” “everlasting eternal life”, however, the person who refuses and rejects Jesus by their “unbelief” “remain” under the “anger, violent passion and justifiable abhorrence” of God the Father.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we discover the extremely important idea of “trusting in” Jesus. Those who “believe” in Him will receive “everlasting life”, but those who do not put their faith and trust in Him will “remain” under “God's wrath”. In other words, people who “trust” in Jesus are forgiven of their sins and obtain “eternal life” with God, however those who do not “believe” Him shall remain in their “sins” of which God abhors. John the Baptist gave both an invitation and a warning to his disciples concerning a relationship with God through His Son Jesus, and those who are wise will not only think this through to it's completion, but will also yield their life to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see John share how “the Pharisees heard Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
