Believe and See Greater Things - John 1:50

John the apostle wrote how “Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! Nathanael said unto him, How do you know me? Jesus answered and said to him, Before that Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you. Nathanael answered and said unto him, Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel”, and in chapter one and verse fifty of his book, John shared how Jesus asked Nathanael, “because I said unto you, I saw you under the fig tree, you believe?” where we read:

Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto you, I saw you under the fig tree, you believe? you shall see greater things than these.

The verse reads, “Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto you, I saw you under the fig tree, you believe? John began with the words, “Jesus answered which means “Jesus who is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “and said unto him” which means “and uttered, declared, proclaimed and question Nathanael”, “Because I said unto you” or “since and on account that I, Jesus, uttered, declared and proclaimed to you, Nathanael”, “I saw you under the fig tree” which means “I, Jesus, observed, noticed and perceived you, Nathanael, beneath the tree that bears fig fruit”, “you believe” or “you, Nathanael, thought to be true, were persuaded and placed confidence within Jesus”? John shared how Jesus questioned “Nathanael” as to his “belief” in Him just because He told Him that He saw Him under a “fig tree”.

The verse goes on to say, “you shall see greater things than these.” John continued with the words, “you shall see” which means “you, Nathanael, will perceive, notice and discover” “greater things than these” or “more excellent, splendid, highly esteemed and important things than that Jesus noticed him under a fig tree”. John shared how Jesus told “Nathanael” he would “observe” much more splendid and important “things” than Jesus noticing him under a tree.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus acknowledged “Nathanael's” belief in Him just because He told him He saw him under a “fig tree”. Jesus also promised “Nathanael” he would observe much “greater things” than that observance. God has many “great things” to show people who put their faith and trust in His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him, He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (See Ephesians 3:20)

Next time John shares how Jesus tells Nathanael, “Hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
