John the apostle wrote how Jesus, “came he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There came a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus said unto her, Give me to drink”, and in chapter four and verse eight of his book, John shared how Jesus', “disciples were gone away … to buy meat” where we read:
(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
The verse reads, “(For his disciples were gone away ...” John began with the words, “(For his disciples” or “because, since and on account that Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “were gone away” which means “were departed and left”. John parenthetically shared how Jesus' “disciples” had departed from the “well” upon which Jesus was seated.
The verse continues, “... unto the city to buy meat.)”. John added the words, “unto the city” which means “toward the dwelling place, habitation and abode” “to buy meat” or “to purchase food or nourishment”. John shared how Jesus' disciples had left to the nearby “dwelling place” to purchase “food” for them.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn that Jesus was “alone” at the “well” when the “woman” from “Samaria” approached Him. The fact that Jesus was by Himself demonstrates His willingness to have a personal relationship with every person who will believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Those who are wise will yield their lives to the One who is willing to receive every person who desires to meet with Him.
Next time John shares how Jesus', “how is it that you, being a Jew, ask drink of me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
