John the apostle wrote, “the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there. And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus said unto him, They have no wine. Jesus said unto her, Woman, what have I to do with you? my hour is not yet come. His mother said unto the servants, Whatsoever he says unto you, do it”, and in chapter two and verse six of his book, John shared about, “six water-pots of stone”, where we read:
And there were set there six water-pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
The verse reads, “And there were set there six water-pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, ...” John began with the words, “and there were set there” which means “and there was set, appointed and laid up” “six water-pots of stone” which means “six vessels for holding water or water jars”, “after the manner of the purifying” or “down from, through out, according to and toward the cleansing, purification and ritual purgation or washing” “of the Jews” which means “belonging to the people within the Jewish nation”. John shared how there were “six water jars” which were used according to the Jewish “cleansing and purification” nearby.
The verse continues, “... containing two or three firkins apiece.” John added the words, “containing two or three firkins” which means “having space or room for receiving or holding two or three measures of about nine gallons” “apiece” or “each”. John shared how these “six water jars” were large and were each able to hold about nine gallons of liquid.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn another part of the story concerning the lack of “wine” at the wedding feast. Jesus was asked by His mother, Mary, to solve this problem, and these “six water pots” will be used by Jesus. Jesus had a plan to “help” mankind not only with their physical problems, but also with their spiritual problem of sin. Jesus is beginning His ministry among people at this point in John's writing, and those who are wise will examine the evidence of Jesus' power and purpose for “solving” the problems of mankind. Let all who carefully consider these things yield to Him.
Next time John shares how Jesus told the servants, “fill the water-pots with water”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
