Men Loved Darkness Rather than Light - John 3:19

John the apostle shared how Jesus told Nicodemus, “as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up. That whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God”, and in chapter three and verse nineteen of his book, John shared how Jesus says, “this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light” where we read:

And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world,

and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

The verse reads, “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, ... John began with the words, “and this is the condemnation” which means “and the following exists as the judgment and censorship of mankind”, “that light is come” or “the truth and it's knowledge together with spiritual purity associated with it has appeared, and come forth” “into the world” which means “into the earth and all it's inhabitants or human family”. John shared how “the condemnation” or “judgment and censure” came to mankind because “light” or His “truth” has appeared within the earth and the following was their reaction to it.

The verse goes on to say, “... and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. John continued with the words, “and men loved darkness” which means “and people whether male or female entertained, were fond of, contented and well pleased with blindness, and ignorance respecting divine things and human duties and the accompanying ungodliness and immorality” “rather than light” or “to a greater degree, more willingly, readily and sooner than the truth and it's knowledge together with spiritual purity associated with it”, “because their deeds” which means “since and on account that the business, acts, enterprises and undertakings of those who loved darkness rather than light” “were evil” or “existed as full of labors, annoyances, hardships and wickedness”. John shared how people were more “fond of and contented with” their “blindness and ignorance” rather than “truth and it's knowledge” because their “acts and undertakings” were “filled with labors and wickedness”.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn that “condemnation” exists among people because they “loved” “wickedness and ignorance” more than the “truth” and the “knowledge of it”. Jesus came to die for the “sins” of mankind, however, because many people “love” their “wicked deeds”, they do not want Jesus or anyone else to correct them. Jesus came not only to provide “forgiveness” of sins, but also to purify people from them. John the apostle wrote in his epistle, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”, (See 1 John 1:9) and Jesus will “forgive” and “cleanse” anyone who yields their life to Him so they may live forever with His Father God in Heaven.

Next time John shares how Jesus says, “everyone that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
