Condemned or Not Condemned - John 3:18

John the apostle shared how Jesus told Nicodemus, “as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up. That whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved”, and in chapter three and verse eighteen of his book, John shared how Jesus said the person, “that believes on him is not condemned” where we read:

He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already,

because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

The verse reads, “He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, ... John began with the words, “He that believes on him” which means “the person whether male or female who thinks to be true, is persuaded and has confidence in God's Son Jesus” “is not condemned” or “does not exist as judged and censured”: “but he that believes not” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the person whether male or female who does not think to be true, is not persuaded and has does not have confidence in God's Son Jesus” “is condemned already” or “exists as judged and censured even now and at this time”. John shared how Jesus said the person who puts their “trust and faith” in Him does not “exist as judged and censured”, however, the person who does not put their “trust and faith” in Him lives “judged and censured” even now.

The verse continues, “.. because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John added the words, “because he has not believed” which means “since and on account that the person whether male or female has not put their faith and trust” “in the name” or “within which the name covers including the thoughts or feelings of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering” “of the only begotten Son of God” which means “pertaining to the sole and single of His kind male offspring”. John shared how a person exists as “condemned” because they do not put their “faith and trust” in God Son Jesus' name.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn what prevents someone from being “condemned” as well as what “condemns” a person. When a person puts their “faith and trust” in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they are no longer “condemned”, however, when a person refuses to receive and accept Jesus, they remain“condemned”. God's desire is to move everyone from their status of being “judged unto condemnation” to “forgiven and freed” from sin and it's curse. This is why Jesus came. Jesus paid the price of death on the cross in the place of every person in the world, and when they put their “faith and trust” in Him, they will enjoy the “freedom” from “condemnation” He brings. Let all who consider these words “believe” and no longer be “condemned”.

Next time John shares how Jesus says, “this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
