John the apostle wrote, “the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there. And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus said unto him, They have no wine. Jesus said unto her, Woman, what have I to do with you? my hour is not yet come. His mother said unto the servants, Whatsoever he says unto you, do it. And there were set there six water-pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus said unto them, Fill the water-pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he said unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it”, and in chapter two and verse nine of his book, John begins to share what happened, “when the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine”, where we read:
When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not from where it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
The verse reads, “When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not from where it was:” John began with the words, “When the ruler” which means “at the time and moment the superintendent of the dining room or table master” “of the feast” or “belonging to the wedding banquet” “had tasted the water that was made wine” which means “had tried, perceived and partook of the flavor of the water that became and happened as wine from fruit”, “and knew not from where it was” or “and perceived, noticed, observed and discerned the source of the wine”. John shared how the “host” of the “wedding banquet” “tasted” the “water that became wine” and did not know from where it came.
The verse continues, “(but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,” John added the words, “(but the servants” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the men of servile condition and ministers at the wedding banquet” “which drew the water knew;)” or “who dipped the water understood from where and whom the wine came”. John shared how the “wedding banquet servants” knew where the source of the “water that was turned to wine”.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how the “host” or “ruler” of the wedding banquet “tasted” the “water” that Jesus turned into wine and had no idea of the source of it. Though he did not know, the servants of the marriage feast did. They knew Jesus did a miracle, and this “water” the “ruler” was tasted was now made “wine”. Jesus, the Creator of the Universe, performed a “supernatural” miracle using simple “water”, and the people attending the wedding feast were the benefactors of His work. Jesus desires to do a “supernatural” work within every person who will believe and trust in Him, and as they do, He will remove the “sin” from their lives and grant them everlasting life with His Father God. Those who are wise will yield to to the “supernatural” Christ Jesus who changed “water into wine”.
Next time John shares how the governor of the feast says, “you have kept the good wine until now”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
