John the apostle wrote how “Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! Nathanael said unto him, How do you know me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you. Nathanael answered and said unto him, Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel. Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto you, I saw you under the fig tree, you believe? you shall see greater things than these. And he said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man”, and in chapter two and verse one of his book, John shared about, “a marriage in Cana of Galilee” where we read:
And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
The verse reads, “And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee;” John began with the words, “and the third day” which means “and the third sunrise to sunset in travel to the area of Galilee” “there was a marriage” which means “there existed a wedding banquet or feast of nuptials” “in Cana of Galilee” or “within Cana which means place of reeds belonging to Galilee that means circuit and was the name of a region of northern Palestine, bounded on the north by Syria, on the west by Sidon, Tyre, Ptolemais and their territories and the promontory of Carmel, on the south by Samaria and on the east by the Jordan. It was divided into Upper Galilee and Lower Galilee.” John shared how it took “three days” for Jesus and His disciples to travel to “Cana” which was located the region of “Galilee” for a wedding feast being held there.
The verse goes on to say, “... and the mother of Jesus was there:” John continued with the words, “and the mother” which means “and the immediate female progenitor and ancestor” “of Jesus was there” or “belonging to Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate was in that place and location”. John shared how Jesus' “mother” attended the wedding feast in “Cana”.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn about Jesus being on the move. He traveled to “Cana in Galilee” where there was a “wedding banquet and feast”, and it happened that “Jesus' mother”, Mary, was there too. We shall see how “Mary” enters this story in our next few verses, however, let it suffice us to know this “wedding” will be a part of revealing who Jesus is to the world. God loves everyone, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with each of them through His Son Jesus. He invites everyone to His “wedding feast” (See Revelation 19:9 ), and those who are wise will submit to His Son Jesus and receive His invitation to be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with Him in Heaven.
Next time John shares how, “both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
