What are You Seeking? - John 1:38

John the apostle wrote how John the Baptist baptized Jesus and said, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizes with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples. And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he said, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus”, and in chapter one and verse thirty-eight of his book, John shared how, “Jesus turned, and saw them following” where we read:

Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said unto them, What are you seeking?

They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where do you dwell?

The verse reads, “Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said unto them, What are you seeking? John began with the words, “Then Jesus turned which means “at that time the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is salvation turned around”, “and saw them following” which means “and observed, perceived, noticed and discerned John the Baptist's two disciples were accompanying and joining Him”, “and said unto them” or “and uttered, declared, proclaimed to and asked the two disciples” “what are you seeking” which means “what is it that you two disciples are seeking after, striving for and craving”? John shared how “Jesus” noticed the two disciples of John the Baptist “following” Him, and He asked them what they were “seeking”.

The verse continues, “They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where do you dwell?” John added the words, “they said unto him” which means “the two disciples of John the Baptist uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked Jesus”, “Rabbi” or “Master, great one, honorable sir, instructor or teacher”, (“Which to say” or “that is to utter, declare and proclaim”, “being interpreted” which means “explaining, expounding and translating what has been spoken or written in a foreign tongue into the vernacular”, “Master” or “teacher or instructor”) “where do you dwell” or “in what place or location do you, Jesus, remain, abide and tarry”? John shared how John the Baptist's two disciples referred to “Jesus” as a “great Master or teacher” as they asked Him where He lived.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn of the observation of Jesus and the questioning of the two disciples of John the Baptist. As they were “following” Jesus, He recognized them and questioned them concerning their “desire”. John the Baptist told his disciples Jesus was the “Lamb of God”, so these two disciples began to follow Him. Jesus knew they were accompanying Him, so He inquired of them about what they were “seeking”. Their answer was to recognize Him as “Master” or “teacher” and question where He lived. This is the beginning of Jesus gathering His team of disciples who would eventually evangelize the world. Those who are wise “follow” Jesus today, and when He gives them direction, they are to submit to Him and accompany Him wherever He goes.

Next time John shares how Jesus answered the two disciples by saying, “Come and see”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
