John the apostle wrote, “the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there. And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus said unto him, They have no wine. Jesus said unto her, Woman, what have I to do with you? my hour is not yet come. His mother said unto the servants, Whatsoever he says unto you, do it. And there were set there six water-pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus said unto them, Fill the water-pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim”, and in chapter two and verse eight of his book, John shared how Jesus told the servants, “Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast”, where we read:
And he said unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
The verse reads, “And he said unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast.” John began with the words, “And he said unto them” which means “And Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to the servants at the wedding feast”, “draw out now” or “dip into the water jars at this time”, “and bear unto the governor” which means “and carry and bring forth to the superintendent of the dining room or table master” “of the feast” or “belonging to the wedding banquet”. John shared how Jesus instructed the “servants” at the wedding feast to dip into the filled water jars and give it to the host of the banquet.
The verse goes on to say, “And they bare it .” John continued with the words, “and they” which means “and the servants at the wedding feast” “bare it” or “carried and brought forth the water to the governor”. John shared how the “servants at the wedding feast” carried the dipped water to the host of the wedding.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus instructed the “servants at the wedding feast” to “dip” into the water jars, and take the liquid to the “host or governor” of the wedding banquet. We can imagine these servants' hesitation toward obeying this directive, but nonetheless, they obeyed Jesus. God's desire is to have people believe and trust in His Son Jesus as their personal “Lord and Savior”, and when they yield to Him, whatever He says to do, they do. We shall see the result of these servants' obedience to Jesus in our next verse, but for now let it suffice us to understand God's willingness to relate to every person who puts their faith and trust in Jesus Christ His Son.
Next time John begins to share what happened, “when the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
