John the apostle shared how Jesus told Nicodemus, “Marvel not that I said unto you, You must be born again. The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound thereof, but can not tell from where it comes, and where it goes: so is every one that is born of the Spirit”, and in chapter three and verse nine of his book, John shared how Nicodemus asked, “how can these things be?” where we read:
Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
The verse reads, “Nicodemus answered and said unto him, ...” John began with the words, “Nicodemus answered” which means “Nicodemus whose name means conqueror and was a member of the Sanhedrin responded and began to speak” “and said unto him” or “and uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked Jesus” the following words. John shared how “Nicodemus” responded to Jesus by asking Him the following question.
The verse goes on to say, “... How can these things be?” John continued with the words, “how can these things” which means “in what way and manner are the birthing again and anew to” “be” or “exist, happen or occur”? John shared how “Nicodemus” wondered in what way being “born again” could exist.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how “Nicodemus” continued to be in wonder concerning this idea of being “born again”. Though He heard the words directly from Jesus, he could not understand “how” this was possible. Jesus will answer “Nicodemus” in our next few verses, but for now, let all who read these words realize they are not the only ones who do not fully understand what Jesus meant. The idea of being “born again” is received by “faith and trust” in Jesus Christ as a personal “Lord and Savior”, and when a person humbles themselves and receives Him, they may not be able to explain it, but they know they are forgiven of their sins and will receive everlasting life with God in Heaven. In other words, they will be “born again”.
Next time John shares how Jesus asks Nicodemus, “Are you a master of Israel, and know not these things?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
