The apostle John wrote how Jesus, “rose from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. Then came he to Simon Peter: and Peter said unto him, Lord, do you wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do you know not now; but you shall know hereafter. Peter said unto him, You shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash you not, you have no part with me. Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. Jesus said to him, He that is washed need not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and you are clean, but not all”, and in chapter thirteen and verse eleven of his book John shared how Jesus, “knew who should betray him” where we read:
For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, You are not all clean.
The verse reads, “For he knew who should betray him;” John began with the words, “for he knew” which means “because, since and on account that he, Jesus, understood, perceived, noticed and discerned” “who should betray him” or “what person would deliver Him, Jesus, over to the authorities to be judged, condemned, tortured and put to death”. John shared how Jesus perceived who the person was that would “deliver” Him over to the authorities to be “tortured and killed”.
The verse goes on to say, “therefore said he, You are not all clean.” John continued with the words, “therefore said he” which means “wherefore and on this account uttered, declared and proclaimed he, Jesus”, “you are not all clean” or “you, disciples of Jesus, do not exists each, every, the whole and everyone as cleansed”. John shared how Jesus said “you are not all clean” because He understood “Judas Iscariot” would “betray” Him.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we discover how “Judas Iscariot's” “betrayal” of Jesus was known in advance by Him. Jesus knew all along that “Judas” would deliver Him over to the authorities, and when He was before them, they would judge Him, beat Him and eventually kill Him because they were threatened by His ministry. Jesus willingly suffered these things because without Him, no one would be “saved” from the eternal damnation and separation from God to come. God is in the “cleaning” business, and anyone who surrenders their life to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be “set free” from the penalty for sins and inherit eternal life with Him. Let all who read these words seek to be “clean” before God through the power and sacrifice of His Son Jesus.
Next time John shares how Jesus asked His disciples, “know you what I have done to you?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
