Do You Know What Jesus Did? - John 13:12

John the apostle wrote how Jesus, “rose from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. Then came he to Simon Peter: and Peter said unto him, Lord, do you wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do you know not now; but you shall know hereafter. Peter said unto him, You shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash you not, you have no part with me. Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. Jesus said to him, He that is washed need not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and you are clean, but not all. For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, You are not all clean, and in chapter thirteen and verse eleven of his book John shared how Jesus asked His disciples, “know you what I have done to you?” where we read:

So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments,

and was set down again, he said unto them, Know you what I have done to you?

The verse reads, “So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, ... John began with the words, “So after he had washed their feet” which means “then, therefore, accordingly and consequently when Jesus cleansed and performed ablution upon His disciples' physical feet”, “and had taken his garments” or “and lay hold of, claimed and procured his, Jesus', clothing”, He did the following. John shared how Jesus completed “cleansing” His “disciple's feet”, took up His clothing again and did the following.

The verse continues, “... and was set down again, he said unto them, Know you what I have done to you?” John added the words, “and was set down again” which means “and was seated another time”, “he said unto them” or “he, Jesus, uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “know you what I have done” or “do you understand, perceive and discern what I, Jesus, have performed” “to you” which means “toward you, Jesus' disciples”? John shared how Jesus was seated among His “disciples” and asked them whether they understood what He did to them.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus finished washing His disciples' feet, took up His clothing again, was re-seated among them and asked them if they understood what He did to them. Jesus was fulfilling all righteousness to procure the “salvation” of mankind. He came to “serve” people by dying on the cross for their sins which separated them from a relationship with God. If people remained in their sinful state, they would live forever away from God. Jesus came to remedy the sin problem, and He demonstrated the idea of “serving others” by doing so. Those who consider His works should find Him worthy of being surrendered to as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time John shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “you call me Master and Lord: and you say well”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
