The apostle John wrote how Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me. If you had known me, you should have known my Father also: and from henceforth you know him, and have seen him. Philip said unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it suffices us. Jesus said unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet have you not known me, Philip? he that has seen me has seen the Father; and how say you then, Show us the Father?”, and in chapter fourteen and verse ten of his book John shared how Jesus asked Philip, “Believe you not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?”, where we read:
Believe you not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwells in me, he does the works.
The verse reads, “Believe you not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself:” John began with the words, “believe you not” which means “do you, Philip, not trust, rely upon and have confidence” “that I am in the Father” or “that I, Jesus, exist within the Heavenly Father God”, “and the Father in me” which means “and the Heavenly Father God within me, Jesus”? “The words” or “the speeches, discourses and utterances” “that I speak unto you” which means “that I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to you, Philip” “I speak not of myself” or “I, Jesus, do not utter, declare and proclaim concerning Jesus' own self”. John shared how Jesus questioned “Philip” as to whether he “trusted in, relied upon and clung to” the idea that He was “within” the “Heavenly Father God”, and the “Heavenly Father God” was also in Him.
The verse goes on to say, “but the Father that dwells in me, he does the works.” John continued with words, “but the Father” which means “however, notwithstanding, nonetheless and moreover the Heavenly Father God” “that dwells in me” or “who lives, abides and inhabits me, Jesus” “he does the works” which means “he, the Heavenly Father God, performs, makes ready and produces the business, employment, undertakings and enterprises”. John shared Jesus told “Philip” it was the “Heavenly Father” who lived within Him and was responsible for the “undertakings and enterprises” He performed.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we discover Jesus' identification with the “Heavenly Father” as He lived within Him. God the Father was within Jesus and was responsible for the “works and acts” that Jesus performed. Jesus desired to give every person an opportunity to have a personal relationship with His Father God, and because sin separated people from Him, Jesus died for the sins of the whole world. The key is “belief” in Him, and when people put their faith and trust in Jesus, He will forgive their sins, grant them access to a relationship with His Father God and give them eternal and everlasting life. Everything Jesus did was because God the Father lived within Him, and His desire is to have God the Father live within every person who believes.
Next time John shares how Jesus says, “believe me that I am in the Father”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
