The apostle John wrote how Jesus' disciple Philip said to Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father, and it suffices us. Jesus said unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet have you not known me, Philip? he that has seen me has seen the Father; and how say you then, Show us the Father? Believe you not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwells in me, he does the works”, and in chapter fourteen and verse eleven of his book John shared how Jesus said, “believe me that I am in the Father”, where we read:
Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.
The verse reads, “ Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me:” John began with the words, “Believe me” which means “trust in, rely upon, cling to and have confidence in me, Jesus” “that I am in the Father” or “that I, Jesus, exist within the Heavenly Father God”, “and the Father in me” which means “and the Heavenly Father God within me, Jesus”. John shared how Jesus charged “Philip” to “trust and have confidence” that He was within the “Heavenly Father God” and the “Heavenly Father God” was within Him.
The verse continues, “or else believe me for the very works' sake.” John added the words, “or else believe me” which means “or otherwise, lest or at least” “for the very works' sake” or “on behalf and because of the purpose and cause of the selfsame activities, enterprises and undertakings” Jesus performed. John shared how Jesus charged “Philip” to “trust and have confidence” in Him because of the “acts and deeds” He performed.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus instructed “Philip” to “trust in and rely upon” the fact that He was in “God the Father” and “God the Father” was in Him, however, should that be too difficult, Jesus said “Philip” should trust in Him for the “acts and deeds” He performed. Jesus did all things by the power of His Heavenly Father working in Him, and His acts and deeds were a testimony and witness that God the Father was among them. God desires a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and those who seek to have the living God within them must trust in and rely upon Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”. When they surrender their life to Him, He will forgive their sins, grant them everlasting life and begin to do works through them that only God can extend the power to do. May all who read these words “believe”.
Next time John shares how Jesus says, “He that believes on me, the works that I do shall he do also”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
