The apostle John wrote, “Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him. Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God. He rose from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. Then came he to Simon Peter: and Peter said unto him, Lord, do you wash my feet?”, and in chapter thirteen and verse seven of his book John shared how Jesus said, “what I do you know not now” where we read:
Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do you know not now; but you shall know hereafter.
The verse reads, “Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do you know not now;” John began with the words, “Jesus answered and said unto him” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation responded and began to speak and uttered, declared and proclaimed to Simon Peter”, “What I do you know not now” or “that which I, Jesus, perform, make ready and produce at this moment and time you, Peter, do not understand, perceive, notice or discern” John shared how Jesus told “Simon Peter” he was unaware of that which Jesus performed at this moment.
The verse goes on to say, “but you shall know hereafter.” John continued with the words, “but you shall know” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover you, Simon Peter, will perceive, understand, notice and discern” “hereafter or “after these things”. John shared how Jesus told “Simon Peter” he would “understand and perceive” what He was doing in the future.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we discover how Jesus “retained” the meaning of Him washing the feet of His disciples until a later time. “Simon Peter” was not to understand what Jesus was doing as He “washed” his feet, but he would perceive what this meant in the future. God has a purpose and plan for everything Jesus did while He was on the earth. Jesus came to “save” mankind from their sins, and when they submit to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they will be forgiven and inherit everlasting life with His Father God. Though all the details of understanding are not disclosed at this time, God shall reveal them in His perfect timing, and as with “Simon Peter”, those who yield to Him will know in God's perfect time.
Next time we see John share how Peter tells Jesus, “you shall never wash my feet”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
