You Shall Never Wash My Feet - John 13:8

The apostle John wrote, “Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him. Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God. He rose from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. Then came he to Simon Peter: and Peter said unto him, Lord, do you wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do you know not now; but you shall know hereafter, and in chapter thirteen and verse eight of his book John shared how Peter told Jesus, “you shall never wash my feet where we read:

Peter said unto him, You shall never wash my feet.

Jesus answered him, If I wash you not, you have no part with me.

The verse reads, “Peter said unto him, You shall never wash my feet. John began with the words, “Peter said unto him” which means “Peter was one of Jesus' disciples whose name means a little rock or stone uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus”, “you shall never wash my feet” or “you, Jesus, will no and not at any time cleanse or perform ablution upon my, Peter's, physical feet”. John shared how “Peter” told Jesus He would “never” and not at any time “clean” his physical feet.

The verse continues, “Jesus answered him, If I wash you not, you have no part with me.” John added the words, “Jesus answered him” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate responded and began to speak to Peter”, “If I wash you not” or “whether I, Jesus, do not cleanse and perform ablution upon you, Peter”, “you have no part with me” which means “you, Peter, do not hold, possess or own not any lot, destiny, portion or piece alongside of me, Jesus”. John shared how Jesus told “Peter” “if” He did not “cleanse” his feet, he would not possess or own any part of Him.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we see how there was a direct connection between being “served” by Jesus and having a personal relationship with Him. The person who yields their life to Jesus understands He has “served” them by dying on the cross for their sins, and as they receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they gain access to all God has for them. Those who refuse the “salvation” Jesus provided has “no part with” Him. God loves people, and His desire is to relate to people through His Son Jesus. Those who are wise will submit to Jesus and receive every “part” of Him that He desires to provide.

Next time we see John share how Peter says, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
