Am I a Jew? - John 18:35

John the apostle wrote how the high priests and officers led, Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring you against this man? They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto you. Then said Pilate unto them, Take you him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death. That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying what death he should die. Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus answered him, Say you this thing of yourself, or did others tell you of me?”, and in chapter eighteen and verse thirty-five of his book John shared how Pilate asked Jesus, “Am I a Jew?” where we read:

Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you unto me:

what have you done?

The verse reads,Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you unto me: John began with the words, “Pilate answered” which means “Pilate whose name means armed with a spear and was the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria responded and began to speak by asking”, “Am I a Jew” or “do I, Pilate, exist as a person who belongs to the Jewish nation by origin, birth or religion”? “Your own nation” which means “your, Jesus, selfsame people group, tribe and genre” “and the chief priests” or “and the high or principal priests” “have delivered you unto me” which means “have betrayed, commended and treacherously committed you, Jesus, to me, Pilate”. John shared how “Pilate” responded to Jesus' question by asking Him whether He thought “Pilate” was a member of the “Jewish nation” because Jesus' own people and “high priests” delivered Him over to him.

The verse continues, “what have you done?” John added the word, “what have you” or “what is the thing that you, Jesus have” “done” which means “committed, made ready, produced, rendered and constituted”? John shared how “Pilate” questioned Jesus as to what He “committed or produced”.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we discover how “Pilate” responded to Jesus' question about the source of him wondering whether Jesus is the “King of the Jews”. “Pilate” asked Jesus whether He thought he was a member of the “Jewish nation”, and his reason for asking was because Jesus' own people “treacherously betrayed” Him to “Pilate”. “Pilate” wondered what Jesus did that cause them to do this, and Jesus will answer them in our next verse. For now let it suffice us to know that Jesus was fulfilling the plan of His Heavenly Father God to be tried, tortured and crucified for the sins of the world. Because Jesus submitted Himself to “Pilate's” questioning and further judgment, anyone who yields their life to Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God. Let all who read these word hear “Pilate's” question to Jesus, “what have you done?” and surrender their lives to Him.

Next time John shares how Jesus tells Pilate, “My kingdom is not of this world”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
