Are You a King? - John 18:37

John the apostle wrote how the Jewish leaders carried Jesus to Pilate, and after he spoke with Jesus the first time, Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus answered him, Say you this thing of yourself, or did others tell you of me? Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you unto me: what have you done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from here”, and in chapter eighteen and verse thirty-seven of his book John shared how Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you a king then?” where we read:

Pilate therefore said unto him, Are you a king then? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice.

The verse reads,Pilate therefore said unto him, Are you a king then? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. John began with the words, “Pilate therefore said unto him” which means “Pilate whose name means armed with a spear and was the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria then, consequently and on this account uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked Jesus”, “Are you a king then” or “do you exist therefore and on this account as a ruler, leader, commander or prince of the people”? “Jesus answered” which means “The Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation responded and began to speak by saying”, “you say that I am a king” or “you, Pilate, utter, declared and proclaim that I, Jesus, exist as a ruler, leader, commander or prince of the people”. John shared how “Pilate” asked Jesus if He was “a ruler or prince”, and Jesus responded by referring to how “Pilate” labeled Him as a “King”.

The verse continues, “To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice.” John added the words, “to this end was I born” or “for this cause and reason was I, Jesus, birthed, engendered and begotten”, “and for this cause” which means “and on behalf of this position of influence” “came I into the world” or “entered I, Jesus, into the earth”, “that I should bear witness” which means “so I, Jesus, may testify and give testimony” “unto the truth” or “to that which is true in any matter under consideration, truthful and free from pretense, falsehood or deceit”. “Every one that is of the truth” which means “each individual person who belongs to that which is truthful, free from pretense, falsehood or deceit” “hears my voice” or “is endowed with the faculty of hearing, perceiving and understanding my, Jesus', speech, sound of uttered words, language or tongue”. John shared how Jesus told “Pilate” that He was “born” so that He could “testify” to the “truth” of God, and He said everyone who belongs to that which is “truthful” “perceives and understands” His “voice”.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how “Pilate” asked Jesus directly whether He was a “king”, and when Jesus affirmed His word, He verified that this was His purpose for coming into the world. Jesus “testified” of the “truth”, and anyone who desires “truth” in their lives will listen to what He had to say. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for their sins, and everyone who yields their life to Him will be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words understand the “truth” of Jesus and receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time we see John shares how Pilate asks Jesus, “What is truth?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
