Peter Standing at the Door - John 18:16

The apostle John wrote how a, band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, and led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest”, and in chapter eighteen and verse sixteen of his book John shared how “Peter stood at the door without where we read:

But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spoke unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

The verse reads,But Peter stood at the door without. John began with the words, “But Peter” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover Peter whose name means little rock or stone” “stood at the door” or “was standing at the doorway or entrance” “without” which means “outside of the courtyard”. John shared how Jesus' disciple named “Peter” was standing at the entry “door” outside of the courtyard where the arresting crowd took Jesus.

The verse goes on to say, “Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spoke unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.” John continued with the words, “then went out” or “at that time left and departed” “that other disciple” which means “the other student, pupil or attendant”, “which was known unto the high priest” or “that was familiar and acquainted with the chief priest”, “and spoke unto her that kept the door” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the female who attended to the door or entryway”, “and brought in Peter” or “and carried or led Peter whose name means a little rock or stone into the courtyard”. John shared how he went to the maiden that cared for the entryway and told her to allow Peter to come inside the courtyard where Jesus was being held.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how he noticed “Simon Peter” was outside, and because He was familiar with the “high priest”, he spoke to the maiden who kept the “entryway” to allow “Simon Peter” to come into the courtyard. In other words, John used his influence to bring “Simon Peter” to a closer position inside. Regardless of where the disciples were located, it was Jesus who was to be tried, tortured and eventually put to death for the sins of mankind. Everyone has access to the Heavenly Father God through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and for all who believe and trust in Him, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. Let all who will “come closer” and discover all that Jesus endured so they might be saved.

Next time we see John shares, then said the damsel that that kept the door unto Peter, Are not you also one of this man's disciples?, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
