The High Priest Questioning Jesus - John 18:19

John the apostle wrote how, the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, and led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spoke unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. Then said the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Are not you also one of this man's disciples? He said, I am not. And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself”, and in chapter eighteen and verse nineteen of his book John shared how the high priestbegan to question Jesus where we read:

The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

The verse reads,The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, ... John began with the words, “The high priest” which means “the chief and principle priest” “then asked Jesus” or “at that time questioned and inquired of the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “of his disciples” which means “about his, Jesus', students, pupils and attendants”. John shared how the “chief priest” began to ask Jesus questions concerning His “students and pupils”.

The verse goes on to say, “... and of his doctrine.” John continued with the words, “and of his doctrine” or “and pertaining to his, Jesus', teachings and instruction”. John shared how the “chief priest” also asked Jesus about His “teachings” among the people.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we see the beginning of the “trial” of Jesus. The “high priest” began to question Jesus not only about His “disciples” or “students”, but also about His “instruction” given to the people. This “high priest” would have been better off to ask Jesus about His “teachings” so that he might believe in Him, however, the motive and drive of the “high priest” was to catch Jesus in some speech that might convict Him. God knew this would happen, and He allowed it to bring about “salvation” from sins for all mankind. Jesus came to die on the cross so that every person who believes and trusts in Him may be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with Him. Those who are wise will only question Jesus with the motive of yielding their lives to Him.

Next time we see John shares how, “Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world … and in secret have I said nothing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
