The apostle John wrote how, “the high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine”, and in chapter eighteen and verse twenty of his book John shared how, “Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world … and in secret have I said nothing” where we read:
Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.
The verse reads, “Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world;” John began with the words, “Jesus answered him” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation responded and began to speak to him, the high priest”, “I spoke openly” or “I, Jesus, uttered, declared and proclaimed freely, frankly, unreservedly and without concealment” “to the world” which means “toward the earth and it's inhabitants”. John shared how Jesus responded to the “high priest's” question by referring to the way He “taught unreservedly” among the people.
The verse goes on to say, “I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews always resort;” John continued with the words, “I ever taught” or “I, Jesus, at all times and always held discourses, imparted instruction and instilled doctrine” “in the synagogue” which means “within the gathering and assembly of Jews to offer prayers and listen to the reading and expositions of the scriptures”, “and in the temple” or “and within the sacred place at Jerusalem”, “where the Jews” which means “in the place and location that the people of the Jewish nation by origin, birth or religion” “always resort” or “at all times assemble and gather together”. John shared how Jesus told the “high priest” that He always “gave instruction” within the gathering places where people prayed, read and listened to the scriptures as well as in the “temple” located in Jerusalem where people gathered.
Finally the verse says, “and in secret have I said nothing.” John finished the verse by writing, “and in secret” or “and in a hidden or concealed manner” “have I said nothing” which means “have I, Jesus, uttered, declared and proclaimed not one word or thing.”. John shared how Jesus told the “high priest” that He did not say “anything” that was “hidden” or “concealed” from the people who gathered.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we see how Jesus referred to the way He “spoke freely” and without “reserve” among the Jewish people in both their “synagogues” and in the “temple” in Jerusalem. Jesus' words are for everyone, and because His desire was to “save” every person from the penalty for sins, He desires that every person know His purpose and plan. Jesus came to die for the “sins” of the world, and everyone who believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God. This message of love is for every person in the world, and those who are wise will surrender their lives to Him.
Next time we see John shares how Jesus continued by saying, “why ask you me? Ask them which heard me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
