The apostle John wrote how a, “band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, and led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year”, and in chapter eighteen and verse fourteen of his book John shared about what “Caiaphas” said where we read:
Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews,
that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
The verse reads, “Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, ...” John began with the words, “Now Caiaphas was he” which means “moreover Caiaphas whose name means as comely was the person”, “which gave counsel” or “who granted and bestowed consult and deliberation” “to the Jews” which means “toward the people who were Jewish by origin, birth or religion” according to the following statement. John shared how “Caiaphas” was the “high priest” who consulted the Jewish people according to the following statement.
The verse goes on to say, “... that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.” John continued with the words, “that it was expedient” or “that the following existed as beneficial and profitable” “that one man should die” which means “that one male human being should be destroyed, rendered useless, ruined and perished”, “for the people” or “on behalf of the greater population who are gathered together”. John shared how “Caiaphas” told the Jewish people that it was a blessing for them to have “one man” to “die” on their behalf.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how “Caiaphas” actually spoke about Jesus giving His life on behalf of the Jewish nation before it came to pass. We shall see how this was fulfilled in the next few verses, however, let us keep in mind that this was God's plan for the “salvation” of mankind through His Son Jesus. Anyone who yields their life to Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words understand the “blessing” spoken of by “Caiaphas” even though he had no idea just how correct he was in his assessment.
Next time we see John shares how, “Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
