Why Do You Ask Me? - John 18:21

The apostle John wrote how, “the high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing”, and in chapter eighteen and verse twenty-one of his book John shared how Jesus continued by saying, “why ask you me? where we read:

Why ask you me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them:

behold, they know what I said.

The verse reads,Why ask you me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: John began with the words, “why ask you me” which means “for what reason and cause do you, high priest, inquire of and question me, Jesus”? “ask them” or “inquired and question the people” “which heard me” which means “who were endowed with the faculty of hearing, perceiving and understanding me, Jesus”, “what I have said” or “that which I, Jesus, uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which refers to “the people who heard Jesus teach”. John shared how Jesus questioned the “high priest” for the reason he was “asking” Him about his disciples and doctrine, and He told the “high priest” that he should be asking the people who listened to him about what He said.

The verse continues, “behold, they know what I said.” John added the words, “behold, they know” or “lo, look, see and consider, the people perceive, understand, notice and discern” “what I said” which means “that which I, Jesus, uttered, declared and proclaimed”. John shared how Jesus told the “high priest” the people He taught in the “synagogues and temple” “knew” what He proclaimed to them.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus instructed the “high priest” to question the people who heard Him teach as to what He told them. Rather than give him the answer, Jesus directed the “high priest” to ask the people. God knows the condition of every person's heart, and Jesus taught openly so people everywhere would know what He said. Jesus came to the world to save people from the penalty of sins which is “death”, and when they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life with God in Heaven. Those who are able to hear Jesus should yield their lives to Him and receive His gift of forgiveness and everlasting life.

Next time we see John shares how, “the officer which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
