Psalms chapter eleven begins with the heading, “[[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]]” which breaks down, “To the chief Musician” or “to the overseer, preeminent and superintending choral director” “A Psalm” which means “a melody or poem set to notes” “of David” or “belonging to David whose name means beloved and was the second king of Israel”, and in Psalms chapter eleven and verse one David said, “In the LORD put I my trust” where we read,
In the LORD put I my trust: how say you to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?
The verse begins, “In the LORD put I my trust:” David began with the words, “In the LORD” which means “within Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “put I my trust” or “place, set, fix and establish I, David, my refuge, protection, confidence and hope”. David said he fixed his hope and confidence in Jehovah God.
The verse goes on to say, “how say you to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?” David continued with the words, “how say you” or “for what reason and cause do you, opposition to David, utter, declare and proclaim” “to my soul” which means “to my, David's, living being, seat of appetites, emotions, passions and activity of mind”, “Flee” or “move, shake, show grief, waver to and fro and take flight” “as a bird” which means “in likeness and in the manner of a flying bird or fowl” “to your mountain” or “to your, David's, hill country”? David asked why people opposing him would tell him to “fly away” like a bird to his hill country.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how people questioned David's “ability” to “remain” and be stable in the midst of adversity. They thought he should “run” or “fly away” from his troubles, but David's confidence was in Jehovah God. There was no need to run when God was his defense, and anyone who comes to God through His Son Jesus may have the same confidence. God and people who believe and trust in His Son Jesus are a majority, and when we yield to Him, nothing or no one can come against us and win. Isaiah the prophet wrote, “No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, says the LORD.” (See Isaiah 54:17). In other words, Jehovah God defends those who belong to Him. God's mind is toward the eternal, and although it may appear that opposing foes sometimes win on earth, they will never win throughout eternity.
Next time David says, “the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
