In Psalms chapter eighteen David said, “With the merciful you will show yourself merciful; with an upright man you will show yourself upright. With the pure you will show yourself pure; and with the froward you will show yourself froward”, and in chapter eighteen and verse twenty-seven of Psalms David said, “you will save the afflicted people” where we read,
For you will save the afflicted people; but will bring down high looks.
The verse begins, “For you will save the afflicted people;” David began with the words, “For you will save” which means “because, since and on account that you, Jehovah God, shall deliver, give victory to, preserve and rescue” “the afflicted people” or “the nations, kinsman, compatriots and country-men who are lowly, weak, humble and poor”. David said Jehovah God would rescue and preserve nations and people who are lowly, humble and poor.
The verse continues, “but will bring down high looks.” David added the words, “but will bring down” or “however and moreover will sink, humble and abase” “high looks” which means “raised, exalted and haughty mental and spiritual faculties”. David wrote how Jehovah God would “humble and abase” people who proudly raise their eyes as though they are better than others.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how David knew Jehovah God would rescue people who have suffered weakness and poverty, and He would “humble” people who exalt themselves over others. James the apostle wrote, “God resists the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” (See James 4:6). God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and for this to happen, a person must humble themselves, repent of their sins and ask Him for forgiveness. Jesus died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and anyone who yields to Him will be rescued and saved. Praise be unto Jehovah God for His willingness to “save” the “afflicted” and humble those who boastfully believe themselves to be more highly valued than others.
Next time David says, “you will light my candle”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
