Psalms chapter thirteen begins with the heading, “[[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]]” which breaks down, “To the chief Musician” which means “to the overseer, preeminent and superintending choral director”, “A Psalm” or “a melody or poem set to notes” “of David” which means “belonging to David whose name means beloved and was the second king of Israel”, and in chapter thirteen and verse one David asked, “How long will you forget me, O LORD? for ever?” where we read,
How long will you forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long will you hide your face from me?
The verse begins, “How long will you forget me, O LORD? for ever?” David began with the words, “How long” which means “until and even unto what length of time” “will you forget me” or “shall you, Jehovah God, ignore, cease to care for and be oblivious to me, David”, “O LORD” which means “O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. “For ever” or “unto perpetuity, eminence and endurance of time”? David asked Jehovah God for what length of time was He going to ignore and cease to care for Him, and He inserted, “unto perpetuity?”.
The verse continues, “how long will you hide your face from me?” David added the words, “how long” or “until and even unto what length of time” “will you hide your face from me” which means “shall you, Jehovah God, conceal and carefully keep secret your, Jehovah God's, countenance and presence apart and separate from me, David”? David asked Jehovah God for what length of time would he also keep secret his presence and countenance from him.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how David wondered where the LORD was in his life. It appeared to David that God “forgot” him for some length of time, and he thought Jehovah was keeping His countenance from him as well. Sometimes we may believe that God has forsaken us when He has not responded to us quickly enough or not at all. We might feel forgotten and as though Jehovah God has hidden from us. Neither case is true, and when we are tested in this manner, we must rely upon His word that He will “never leave us or forsake us”. (See Deuteronomy 31:6) God loves people, and He desires to have a personal relationship with everyone through His Son Jesus. God sent Jesus to the world to die for the sins of every person, and when we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us eternal life and never forget us nor continually hide. Let us give Him praise and glory for who He is and who He promises to be to us for all eternity.
Next time David asks, “How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
