Psalms chapter fourteen begins with the heading, “[[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David]]” which breaks down, “To the chief musician” or “to the overseer, preeminent and superintending choral director” “A Psalm” which means “a melody or poem set to notes” “of David” or “belonging to David whose name means beloved and was the second king of Israel, and in Psalms chapter fourteen and verse one David said, “the fool has said in his heart, there is no God” where we read,
The fool has said in his heart, There is no God.
They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that does good.
The verse begins, “The fool has said in his heart, There is no God.” David began with the words, “The fool” which means “the senseless, ignoble and disgraceful person whether male or female who has no perception of ethical and religious claims” “has said in his heart” or “has spoken, boasted and avowed within the foolish person's inner man, mind, understanding and soul”, “there is no God” which means “nothing, none, naught and without divine, true, ruling and judging Supreme One or God”. David referred to the person who who declares within their soul that the Supreme God does not exist or that they have no need to regard His words.
The verse continues, “They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that does good.” David added the words, “they are corrupt” or “fools are in ruin, decay, marred, spoiled and rotted”, “they have done abominable works” which means “fools have made ready, performed and produced abhorred, detested and loathing deeds, practices and inventions”, “there is none that does good” or “and not one or any person whether male or female makes ready, performs or produces pleasant, agreeable and excellent acts and deeds”. David declared that people who are “foolish” are ruinous and spoiled within, they commit detestable and abhorrent deeds and not one of them performs pleasant and agreeable acts.
When we think through words in this verse, we realize David is referring to people who say “no” to God. The words, “there is”, were added by the translators so the verse actually reads, “the fool has said in his heart, no God”. Because there is no true belief that God exists, they do not regard what He has to say. Rather than perform “pleasant and agreeable” deeds, they produce detestable and abhorrent ones. This may cause us to wonder, why does God give attention to anyone? The answer? He loves people. He knows people, and His desire was to save them from their “foolish” selves even when they did not believe in Him and disregarded what He had to say. God sent His Son Jesus into the world even as Jesus declared, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” (See John 3:16-17) In other words, God knows people are “foolish”, and sometimes they do not believe He exists. They often tell Him “no” even when they believe in Him. Let all praise and glory be to Jehovah God who knows us and still desires to have a personal loving relationship with everyone.
Next time David says, “the LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
