The Sorrows of Death Compassed Me - Psalms 18:4

In Psalms chapter eighteen David said, “I will love you, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from my enemies”, and in chapter eighteen and verse four of Psalms David said, the sorrows of death compassed me” where we read,

The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

The verse begins, The sorrows of death compassed me, .... David began with the words, “The sorrows of death” which means “the ropes, territories, bands and cords belonging to dying, pestilence and ruin” “compassed me” or “surrounded and encompassed me, David”. David said the “bands and cords” of “dying” surrounded him.

The verse goes on to say,... and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. David continued with the words, “and the floods” or “and the torrents, shafts, steams, brooks and rivers” “of ungodly men” which means “pertaining to worthless, good for nothing, unprofitable and base people whether male or female” “made me afraid” or “terrified, overwhelmed and frightened me, David”. David wrote how torrents of people who were worthless and unprofitable caused him to be afraid.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how David was troubled all around, and people who were base and worthless caused him to be fearful. David relied upon Jehovah God to be his protector and defense, however, this did not eliminate him from having to endure trouble. King Saul of Israel attempted to kill David, and he had many men who were with him in his pursuit. (See 1 Samuel 18-19) Jehovah God, however, protected David, and he was without harm from Saul. David had a personal relationship with Jehovah, and God desires to have this type of relationship with everyone. He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of the world, and anyone who believes and trusts in Him as their “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with Him. Though opposition will come against us, let us praise Jehovah God for His provision and protection as we place our confidence in Him.

Next time David says, the snares of death prevented me, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
