In Psalms chapter twelve David said, “Help, LORD; for the godly man ceases, for the faithful fail from among the children of men”, and in chapter twelve and verse two of Psalms David said, “ they speak vanity every one with his neighbor” where we read,
They speak vanity every one with his neighbor:
with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.
The verse begins, “They speak vanity every one with his neighbor:” David began with the words, “They speak vanity” which means “the ungodly people and their unreliable offspring utter, declare and proclaim emptiness, falsehood and nothingness” “every one” or “each, the whole and all of the ungodly and unfaithful people” “with his neighbor” which means “along with the ungodly and unfaithful people's friends, companions, fellow-citizens and other people”. David said the people who are no longer “godly” and their “unfaithful” offspring proclaim emptiness and falsehood with the people who surround them.
The verse goes on to say, “with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.” David continued with the words, “with flattering lips” or “by using smoothness and slippery language, speech and talk” “and with a double heart” which means “and by the use of deceitful inner souls, understandings, knowledge, thinking and reflection” “do they speak” or “do the ungodly and unfaithful utter, declare and proclaim”. David wrote how the “ungodly” people and their “unfaithful” offspring use smooth talk and deceitful souls to make their declarations.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through David how the ungodly and unfaithful people who surrounded him used their voices for empty talk and smooth language that came from their “double hearts”. Jesus said, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks” (See Luke 6:45). David was very familiar with this idea. The people and their children who surrounded him were deemed unworthy to give him “help” because they only used their voices for emptiness and smooth talking. God loves people, and He desires to give them eternal “help” by saving their souls. He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross to pay the price for the sins of all mankind. Although other people are often unreliable, Jehovah God and His Son Jesus are to be praised and honored for their constant faithfulness to help us in our time of need. (See Hebrews 4:16)
Next time David says, “The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
