Arising and Taking Up His Bed - Mark 2:12

Mark wrote how Jesus said to a “paralytic man” brought to him, “Son, your sins be forgiven you”, and “scribes” were questioning His statement. When He knew what they were asking, Jesus answered them, “that you may know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins, (he said to the sick of the palsy), I say unto you, Arise, and take up your bed, and go your way into your house”, and in chapter two and verse twelve of his book, Mark shares how the “man sick with the palsy”, “arose, took up the bed, and went forth” where we read:

And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.

The verse reads, “And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; Mark began with the words, “and immediately” which means “and straightaway and forthwith” “he arose” or “the man sick of the palsy raised up”, “took up the bed” which means “elevated and lifted his pallet or camp bed which is rather simple and holds only one person”, “and went forth” or “and left and departed” “before them all” which means “in front of and in the presence of each, every, the whole and everyone of the scribes”. Mark shared how the “paralytic man” rose up “immediately” and carried his “bed” before all the “scribes” and people who were watching him.

The verse goes on to say, insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.” Mark added the word, “insomuch that” which means “then, therefore and wherefore” “they were all amazed” or “the scribes and the people were each, every, the whole and everyone thrown out of position, displaced, astonished and thrown into wonderment”, “and glorified God” which means “and praised, extolled, magnified and celebrated the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “we never saw it” which means “all the people no and in no way perceived, understood, noticed or discerned” “on this fashion” or “in this manner and likeness”. Mark shared how the people watching the man were “astonished” when he “raised himself up” and carried off his “bed”, and they began to “praise and celebrate” God for this miracle.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see the reaction of the people who watched Jesus heal the “paralytic man”. They never saw anything like this before, and they were “astonished” at it. They reacted by “praising and celebrating” God. Those who carefully consider all the wonderful works of Jesus, both physically and spiritually, should respond by “believing and trusting” in Him and giving Him praise and honor for His wonderful works among women and men.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus, went forth again by the sea side”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
