Uncovering the Roof - Mark 2:4

Mark wrote, “And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them. And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four”, and in chapter two and verse four of his book, Mark shares how the four men, uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bedwhere we read:

And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was:

and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.

The verse reads, “And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: Mark began with the words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “they could not come nigh unto him” or “the four men carrying the paralytic man were unable to approach and come near to Jesus” “for the press” which means “because of the collection of people, throng and multitude”., “they uncovered” or “the four men took off” “the roof where he was” which means “the thatch or top decking of the house where Jesus was”. Mark shared how the four men were unable to get near to Jesus because of the crowd of people gathered, so they “took a portion of the roof” off the house where Jesus was located.

The verse goes on to say, and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.” Mark continued with the words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “they had broken it up” or “the four men had dug through the roof”, “they let down the bed” which means “the four men lowered the pallet or camp bed which usually holds one person” “wherein the sick of the palsy lay” or “upon which the man who was a paralytic was lain”. Mark shared how the four men lowered the “bed” with the “paralytic man” on it through the hole in the roof.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see the determination of these four men who bore their “paralytic” friend. Though there seemed to be no access to Jesus, these men made a way to get to Him. We can imagine the surprise as these men dug through the roof of the house where Jesus was, and when they began to lower their “paralytic friend”, there is no doubt they saw a difference in their purpose. God loves people who are “determined” to get to Him, and when they understand who Jesus is, the Christ and Messiah, they should do everything they can to yield their lives to Him.

Next time Mark shares what happened, when Jesus saw their faith”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
