The Countenance of the Angel - Matthew 28:3

Matthew the apostle wrote, “In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulcher. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it”, and in chapter twenty-eight and verse three of his book, Matthew shared how the angel's, “countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow” where we read:

His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

The verse reads, “His countenance was like lightning, ... Matthew began words, “His countenance” which means “the angel's form, aspect and external appearance” “was like lightning” or “was similar to and in likeness the glare and bright shining of lightning in the sky”. Matthew shared how the appearance of the “angel” was like the “lightning” that shines brilliantly in the sky.

The verse goes on to say, “... and his raiment white as snow:” Matthew continued with the words, “and his raiment” or “and the angel's cloak and outer garment” “white as snow” which means “was the color of pure descending snow”. Matthew shared how the outer “garments” were as “white” as the falling “snow”.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how “bright” an appearance the “angel” made before the women. We can imagine their reaction to this “angel” especially because of his “radiant” nature and “form”. God knew these women were troubled and concerned over Jesus' death, and He sent His “angel” to bring them comfort through his message. God loves people, and He is concerned with their “souls” which without a belief and trust in His Son Jesus are separated from Him. To these women He sent a “brilliantly adorned angel”, and for those reading these words, He sent His Son Jesus so that all may believe.

Next time Matthew shares, “for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
