Say Nothing to Any Man - Mark 1:44

Mark wrote, “there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If you will, you can make me clean. And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and said unto him, I will; be clean. And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed. And he straightly charged him, and forthwith sent him away”, and in chapter one and verse forty-four of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus told the leprous man who was cleansed, “see you say nothing to any man” where we read:

And said unto him, See you say nothing to any man: but go your way, show yourself to the priest,

and offer for your cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

The verse reads, “And said unto him, See you say nothing to any man: but go your way, show yourself to the priest, ... Mark began with the words, “and said unto him” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the man healed of leprosy”, “see you say nothing” or “take heed and be careful that the man with leprosy not utter, declare or proclaim anything” “to any man” which means “to any person or human being whether male or female”: “but go your way” or “nevertheless, moreover and depart and leave”, “show yourself” which means “expose and give evidence of yourselves” “to the priest” which refers to “the one who offers sacrifices and in general is busied with sacred rites”. Mark shared how Jesus told the man with leprosy not to say “anything” to anyone, but rather to “depart” from Him and “expose” Himself to the “priest” who was to examine leprous people who were cleansed.

The verse goes on to say, “... and offer for your cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.” Mark continued with the words, “and offer” which means “and bring a present or tender” “for your cleansing” or “concerning and on account of the leprous man's purification and ritual purgation or washing” “those things which Moses commanded” which refers to “the laws concerning leprous people which Moses ordered, assigned, enjoined and prescribed”, “for a testimony” or “towards a witness” “unto them” which means “to the priests”. Mark shared how Jesus instructed the man with leprosy to obey “Moses' law” concerning those who have been “cleansed” of leprosy.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus wanted the healed leprous man to obey “Moses' law” concerning cleaning from leprosy. (See Leviticus 13 for Moses' law) The law of God is righteous, and Jesus kept His law. Those who are wise will understand Jesus' desire for people to follow the laws of God, but knows He came to save people from their “sins” of violating them. Let all who consider Jesus' command to the “leprous man” present themselves to the “Great High Priest” Jesus with the offering of His sacrificial death as the token for the cleansing of their “sins” or “spiritual leprosy”.

Next time Mark shares how the man, “went out, and began to publish it much”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
