Many Gathered Together - Mark 2:2

Mark wrote how, “And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house”, and in chapter two and verse two of his book, Mark wrote how, “straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive themwhere we read:

And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.

The verse reads, “And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: Mark began with the words, “and straightway” which means “and immediately and forthwith” “many were gathered together” or “a large group of people were assembled and collected together”, “insomuch that” which means “so then, therefore and wherefore” “there was not room to receive them” which means “there was no space to contain all the people”, “no, not so much as” or “not even or yet” “about the door” which means “near to or toward the door of the house”. Mark shared how the people assembled at the house where Jesus was and there was insufficient room for them both inside and at the “door” of the house.

The verse goes on to say, and he preached the word unto them.” Mark continued with the words, “and he preached” which means “and Jesus heralded, declared and proclaimed publicly” “the word unto them” or “the sayings and moral precepts by God to the people”. Mark shared how Jesus “proclaimed” the “word of God” to the people who were gathered both inside the house and at it's door.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see the great attraction Jesus was to the people who were assembled. Jesus was unusual, and His miracle working powers and words were attractive to those who saw and heard Him. There were so many people assembled at this house that there was no room for them inside, and the overflow of people gathered at the door just to get a glimpse of Him or hear His words. God loves people, and He desires to have a relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Those who examine the life of Jesus and His words will find His is not only attractive, but also worthy of their worship and praise. Let all who read these words gather unto Jesus who is the “Savior” of their souls.

Next time Mark shares how people brought to Jesus, one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
