The Spirit Descending Upon Jesus Like a Dove - Mark 1:10

Mark wrote how John the Baptist said, “There comes one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan”, and in chapter one and verse ten of his book, Mark wrote how John, “saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon” Jesus where we read:

And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened,

and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

The verse reads, “And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, ... Mark began words, “and straightway” which means “and immediately and forthwith” “coming up out of the water” which means “rising up and ascending from the water in the Jordan River”, “he saw the heavens opened” or “John observed, noticed, discovered and discerned the cleaving, rending and dividing asunder vaulted expanse of the sky”. Mark shared how John the Baptist noticed the “sky” open after Jesus came up from the “water”.

The verse continues, “... and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:” Mark added the words, “and the Spirit” which means “and the the third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, coeternal with the Father and the Son coming and being sent down” “like a dove descending” which means “ in the likeness and manner of a dove like bird” “upon Him” which means “on Jesus”. Mark shared how the “Holy Spirit” of God came down upon Jesus in the likeness of a “dove”.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how God's Spirit rested upon Jesus when He humbled Himself to be “baptized” by John. God said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” in Matthew chapter three and verse seventeen, and therefore all three members of the trinity were present – The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. God's Spirit is ready to “descend” upon all who are obedient to Him and put their “trust and faith” in His resolve to “save” them from their sins. Let all who read these words understand Jesus' obedience to be “baptized” and God the Father's acknowledgement of it, and may they all yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Mark writes how, “there came a voice from heaven, saying, You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
