Jesus Baptized by John the Baptist - Mark 1:9

Mark wrote how, “John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey. And preached, saying, There comes one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost”, and in chapter one and verse nine of his book, Mark wrote, “that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John” where we read:

And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee,

and was baptized of John in Jordan.

The verse reads, “And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, ... Mark began words, “and it came to pass” which means “and it happened, occurred, appeared in history and became”“in those days” which means “in the days in which John the Baptist was baptizing”, “that Jesus came” or “that Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate approached and appeared” “from Nazareth” which means “apart and separated from the city of Nazareth which means the guarded one and was the ordinary residence and home town of Jesus” “of Galilee” or “belonging to the region of northern Palestine which is bounded on the north by Syria, on the west by Sidon, Tyre, Ptolemais and their territories and the promontory of Carmel and on the south by Samaria and on the east by the Jordan”. Mark shared how “Jesus” who was from the “town of Nazareth” appeared within the days when John the Baptist was baptizing people.

The verse goes on to say, “... and was baptized of John in Jordan.” Mark continued with the words, “and was baptized” which means “and was dipped repeatedly, immersed and submerged” “of John” which means “by John the Baptist” “in Jordan” which means “within the Jordan River”. Mark shared how John the Baptist “baptized” Jesus in the Jordan River.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse,we see how Jesus “submitted” Himself to be “baptized” by John. Matthew gave this account of Jesus' baptism, Then came Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbade him, saying, I have need to be baptized of you, and come you to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becomes us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered him.” (See Matthew 3:13-15). Jesus demonstrated the method for people to demonstrate their outward commitment to be “dead” to the ways of “sin” and alive to the “righteous ways” of God. All who “come to Jesus” in “faith and trust” in Him will follow His example of “baptism” and have their “sins” remitted and receive “everlasting life” from God.

Next time Mark writes how John, saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon” Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
