Jesus Calls James and John - Mark 1:20

Mark wrote as Jesus, “walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him. And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets”, and in chapter one and verse twenty of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus, “called them” where we read:

And straightway he called them:

and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

The verse reads, “And straightway he called them: Mark began words, “and straightway” which means “and immediately and forthwith” “he called them” which means “Jesus saluted, bid and invited James and John”. Mark shared after Jesus “saw” James and John, He “invited” them to join Him.

The verse continues, and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.” Mark added the words, “and they left their father” which means “and James and John departed from and forsook their generator or male ancestor” “Zebedee” which means “my gift” “in the ship” or “in the sailing vessel” “with the hired servants” which refers to “the hirelings or wage-workers”, “and went after him” or “and followed behind in and arrears of Jesus”. Mark shared how James and John departed from their “father Zebedee” and his hirelings and “followed” Jesus.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse,we see how “immediate” this “calling” of Jesus was to “James and John”. Jesus called, and they responded. They left their father and followed Jesus. God loves this type of response, and when Jesus “invites” someone to “follow” Him, they should obey Him in the same manner as “James and John”. Those who are listening will hear “Jesus” call, and the best response is to yield to Him as a personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Mark tells how Jesus and His new disciples, “went into Capernaum”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
