Simon and Andrew Follow Jesus - Mark 1:18

Mark wrote as Jesus, “walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men”, and in chapter one and verse eighteen of his book, Mark wrote how Simon and Andrew, “forsook their nets, and followed him” where we read:

And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

The verse reads, “And straightway they forsook their nets, ... Mark began words, “and straightway” which means “and immediately and forthwith” “they forsook” which means “Simon and Andrew let go of, left and disregarded” “their nets” or “Simon and Andrew's fishing nets”. Mark shared how “Simon and Andrew” left the “nets” behind them.

The verse continues, “... and followed him.” Mark added the words, “and followed” which means “and joined and accompanied” “him” which means “Jesus”. Mark shared how “Simon and Andrew” “joined” Jesus and accompanied Him wherever He was going.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see the response of “Simon and Andrew” to Jesus' call. Jesus “invited” “Simon and Andrew” to “come after” Him, and His promise was to “make them fishers of men”. They responded by “following” Him. Jesus continues to “call” people today, and His desire is for all people to relate to God the Father through a relationship with Him. He waits for every person's response, and those who are wise will leave “what they have” behind and “follow” Him.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus sees, “James … and John”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
