The Disciples See and Worship Jesus - Matthew 28:17

Matthew the apostle wrote how an angel said to the women who came to visit Jesus' grave, “Fear not: for I know that you seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there shall you see him: lo, I have told you. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshiped him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and showed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers. Saying, Say you, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them”, and in chapter twenty-eight and verse seventeen of his book, Matthew wrote when the disciples, “saw him, they worshiped him” where we read:

And when they saw him, they worshiped him: but some doubted.

The verse reads, “And when they saw him, ... Matthew began words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “they saw him” or “the disciples' perceived, observed, noticed, discerned and discovered Jesus”. Matthew shared about the “moment” Jesus' “disciples” saw Him.

The verse goes on to say, “... they worshiped him: but some doubted.” Matthew continued with the words, “they worshiped him” or “Jesus' disciples knelt or prostrated themselves before Jesus to do homage, respect and honor to Him”: “but some doubted” which means “nonetheless, nevertheless, moreover and a few of Jesus' disciples wavered”. Matthew shared how Jesus' disciples “gave Him” respect, homage and honor, however, some of Jesus' disciples “wavered in their belief” of Him.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we can imagine the reaction of Jesus' disciples when they saw Jesus, not only were they pleasantly “surprised”, they were abundantly excited. They responded in “worship” which anyone who really “sees” Jesus as the Messiah shall give Him. Romans chapter fourteen and verse eleven says, For it is written, As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God”, and it is certain, either a person will “worship” Jesus while they live on the earth, or they will “bow and confess” to Him in the future. There are some like these few disciples who “doubted” Jesus, however, their “doubt” doesn't change the fact that Jesus is the Christ – the Son of the Living God.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus says, “all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
