Adin and Ebed - Ezra 8:6

In the book of Ezra, Ezra said, “These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king. Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of Ithamar; Daniel: of the sons of David; Hattush. Of the sons of Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh; Zechariah: and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males an hundred and fifty. Of the sons of Pahathmoab; Elihoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males. Of the sons of Shechaniah; the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males”, and in chapter eight and verse six of Ezra, Ezra shared about, “Adin and Ebed” where we read,

Of the sons also of Adin; Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males.

The verse reads, Of the sons also of Adin;” Ezra began with the words, “of the sons” which means “from the male offspring, progeny and family” “of Adin” or “belonging to Adin whose name means dainty or delicate”. Ezra shared how “Adin” was also among the “chief men” who returned to “Jerusalem” with him.

The verse continues, Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males. Ezra added the word, “Ebed” whose name means “servant” the son of Jonathan or “the male offspring, progeny and family belonging to Jonathan whose name means Jehovah has given”, “and with him fifty males” which means “and alongside and accompanying Ebed fifty male human beings”. Ezra mentioned “Ebed” a “chief man” who was Jonathan's male offspring and “fifty” other male human beings who accompanied him back to “Jerusalem”.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Ezra about another two “chief men” who returned to “Jerusalem” with him. “Adin and Ebed” went back along with “fifty” other “males” when Ezra assembled those he chose to go with him. God knew each of these men, and they were ultimately commissioned by Him. God chooses people today, and when they surrender to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and commission us to serve Him in whatever capacity He chooses in His Kingdom.

Next time Ezra shares about, “Elam, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
