Six Hundred and Fifty Talents of Silver - Ezra 8:26

In the book of Ezra, Ezra said, “I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him. We fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us. Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them, and weighed unto them the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, even the offering of the house of our God, which the king, and his counselors, and his lords, and all Israel there present, had offered”, and in chapter eight and verse twenty-six of Ezra, Ezra said, “I even weighted unto their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver” where we read,

I even weighed unto their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver,

and silver vessels an hundred talents, and of gold an hundred talents;

The verse reads, I even weighed unto their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, ...” Ezra began with the words, “I even weighed unto their hand” which means “I, Ezra, indeed paid out and put forth to their power, might, ability and authority” “six hundred and fifty talents” or “six hundred and fifty round weights” “of silver” which means “pertaining to silver metal”. Ezra shared how he entrusted “six hundred and fifty round weights” of “silver” metal to “Sherbiah and Hasabiah” and their ten relatives.

The verse goes on to say, ... and silver vessels an hundred talents, and of gold an hundred talents; Ezra continued with the words, “and silver vessels” which means “and silver metal implements, utensils and articles” “an hundred talents”which means “a hundred round weights”, “and of gold” or “and pertaining to gold metal” “an hundred talents” which means “a hundred round weights”. Ezra shared how he entrusted “Sherbiah and Hasabiah” and their ten relatives with one hundred round weights of silver metal utensils and one hundred gold metal round weights.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Ezra about the amounts of “silver and gold” articles that were entrusted to “Sherbiah and Hasabiah” and the ten relatives who accompanied them. All of these things were to be used to rebuild the temple of Jehovah God and to reestablish the worship of Him there. God was equipping His people with what they needed to make Him first in their lives, and He does the same for us today. He gave us His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for our sins, and when we surrender our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a passion to serve Him in His Kingdom with the necessary resources to accomplish His will in the world.

Next time Ezra shares about, “twenty basins of gold, of a thousand drams”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
