Elam and Jeshaiah the Son of Athaliah - Ezra 8:7

In the book of Ezra, Ezra said, “These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king. Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of Ithamar; Daniel: of the sons of David; Hattush. Of the sons of Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh; Zechariah: and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males an hundred and fifty. Of the sons of Pahathmoab; Elihoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males. Of the sons of Shechaniah; the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males. Of the sons also of Adin; Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males”, and in chapter eight and verse seven of Ezra, Ezra shared about, “Elam, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah” where we read,

And of the sons of Elam; Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy males.

The verse reads, And of the sons of Elam;” Ezra began with the words, “of the sons” which means “from the male offspring, progeny and family” “of Elam” or “belonging to Elam whose name means eternity”. Ezra shared how the offsprings of “Elam” were among the “chief men” who also returned to Jerusalem with him.

The verse goes on to say, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy males. Ezra continued with the word, “Jeshaiah” whose name means “Jehovah has saved” the son of Athaliah or “the male offspring, progeny and family belonging to Athaliah whose name means afflicted of the Lord”, “and with him seventy males” which means “and alongside and accompanying him, Athaliah and seventy male human beings”. Ezra shared how “Jeshaiah” and “seventy”other “male human beings” also were among the “chief men” who accompanied him back to Israel.

When we think through the words in this verse, we discover through Ezra two more names of the “chief men” who went back to “Jerusalem” with him. The offspring of “Elam” and “Jeshaiah” along with seventy other male human beings returned, and God knew them all. God knows and loves the people of Israel, and He knows and loves us. When we yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us His Holy Spirit who shall guide us into all truth and empower us to go where He says go and to do what He says to do.

Next time Ezra shares about, “the sons of Shephatiah; Zebadiah the son of Michael”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
